Weekly Pastel Classes by Addren Doss

July 17, 2019

I have been asked by numerous people to teach a weekly pastel class. I have now decided to do so.

When: Thursday mornings, August 1 – September 26
(except for Thursday, September 12)
Time: 9:30 am – 12:00 noon
Where: College Place United Methodist Church
Cost: $195 for the 8 week session

To register email me at addrendesigns@aol.com

This class will have a minimum of 6 students and a maximum of 10 students. Registration is on a first come basis. Several people have already indicated they would like to attend, so don’t hesitate to contact me.
When you register I will let you know what type of supplies you will need for this first session.

Beginner and experienced artists are welcome in this class. We will start with the basics and work our way up. Even if you are experienced it never hurts to review the basics, and I will certainly work with you on the level you are currently at. There will be some work from life using simple still life set ups, and some landscape work using photographs.

In this first session we will cover:
How to set up your pastels to give you a better understanding of color harmony and value relationships.
Proportion and basic drawing.
Composition and what makes a good painting.
Under painting — to use or not to use.

I have been working in pastel and been a professional artist for about 30 years, and look forward to sharing with you some of what I have learned during that time.

Pastel Plein Air Sketch to Studio by Addren Doss

Cloud Shadows by Addren Doss

May 22 & 23, 2018
$200
The Florence Thomas Art School
West Jefferson, NC
http://www.florenceartschool.org/

This 2-day plein air / studio workshop is for the intermediate pastel artist who would like to create studio work that has the light and feel of a plein air piece. The mornings will be spent in the field doing value sketches and quick color studies. In the afternoon we will return to the studio to create a larger studio painting. By relying on the sketches done in the field and not a photograph, the studio paintings will be more simplified and light filled.

Addren Doss

Award winning North Carolina artist, Addren Doss, works in oils and pastel, and has been painting professionally for over twenty-five years. Her paintings of landscapes and animals are filled with light, and bold strokes of vibrant color.

After a twenty-year career as a graphic artist Addren attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to study art. She also studied with a number of noted American artists, and her main teacher and mentor has been Albert Handell, master pastel and oil painter. Since she has been fortunate to study with Mr. Handell and others, she feels a strong responsibility to pass along what she has learned by teaching workshops in oil and pastel. Her favorite thing to teach is plein air painting since she believes working from life is so important.

Addren is a master signature member of Women Artists of the West, member of excellence of the Southeastern Pastel Society, a founding member of the Piedmont Outdoor Painting Society, and member of the Pastel Society of North Carolina. Her work can be found in private and corporate collections across the country and in Europe. You can see her work by visiting her website, www.addrendoss.com.

To me, aspen trees are beautiful no matter what the season. I love how the silvery bark reflects the light and the interesting textures and colors found on them. Let me take you for a walk in one of the many aspen groves I discovered this past summer in Wyoming. I’ll start with a monochromatic under painting in three values and build on top of that. I’ll show you how I work from a number of references including plein air pieces, photos, thumbnails, and small color studies to create the larger studio piece.
