In the late 1980's, I took a class in pastels and immediately fell in love with the technique and the immediacy of this wonderful medium. I work mainly in soft pastels, but in the past few years I have turned to oil pastels to experiment with a new medium. No matter which medium I use, however, I paint in an impressionistic style, with emphasis on strong color and contrasting light patterns. Recently, I have been concentrating on painting “en plein air” – painting on location. When painting from life, the light and color of a scene inspires me: the special air surrounding a tree in late afternoon, the stillness of the desert, the energy of a stormy sky. This is what I want to share with whoever views my paintings, communicating to them those singular moments and to experience the beauty that I see. Works In Progress/Series of Paintings National Parks – In my travels around the country, I find there is a difference in the light and color in each region. The desert southwest is a favorite of mine with its brilliant color and clear, crisp air that lends a unique aura to any painting. Blue Ridge Mountains – In a visit to the mountains of North Carolina recently, I was inspired to start working on evening/night-time subjects painted from the overlooks on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I find the softness of the air, cool blue colors, and the neon glow from city streets especially fascinating.
