Member News, Kim Werfel

PSNC Member, Kim Werfel, is doing a pastel painting demo this Sunday, August 2nd at 1pm for the Chatham Arts Gallery, located at 115 Hillsboro St., in Pittsboro.

Call 542-4144 for directions and more information.

They’ll be filming the demo for their computer in the gallery so visitors can learn more about the artists in the gallery.

Her portrait work will be available for viewing at the Chatham Arts Gallery for their theme of “People” through the end of September.

Member News, Rebecca Margolese-Malin

PSNC member, Rebecca Margolese-Malin, will have her artwork on display at Cup A Joe coffee shop in the Timberlyne Shopping Center (1129 Weaver Dairy Road, next to the Chelsea Theater) during the month of August.

Come by and see her selection of portraits and still lifes. The “meet the artist” reception will be Sunday afternoon, August 23, from 2-5pm. This will be her first solo show!

Member News, Dan Vaughan

PSNC Member Dan Vaughan has won 1st place in the juried painting competition at Art & Soul Gallery in Mebane, NC with his pastel of a salt water marsh titled “Cool Morning at Kiawah.”

This painting will be on display at the gallery until the end of July.

Dan Vaughan’s art exhibit at Fleet Feet at 406 Main St in Carrboro, NC has also been extended through the month of July. This is only four doors down from Carrboro ArtsCenter.

a successful and fun committee meeting

Last night the PSNC Publicity, Exhibition and Hospitality committees got together over a meal to discuss the slate of shows scheduled for this fall. A great time was had by all (although the wait service had room for improvement).

Opening Reception for ArtsCenter Show in Carrboro

We hope to see all PSNC members and supporters this Friday,  July 10 from 6-9pm at the ArtsCenter in Carrboro, NC for the opening reception of “A Southern Summer With the Pastel Society of North Carolina.”

There will be tasty food, great wine, and a talented piano player, plus the reception takes place during the 2nd Friday Art Walk, so there will be lots of people stopping by to enjoy our society’s great work!

how to position your easel while plein air painting

Richard McKinley shares some tips on where to set up and how to position your easel when plein air painting for the best painting experience.

“With the advent of nice weather, many of us find ourselves back out under the sun attempting to capture a bit of the fleeting light. A couple of weeks ago, after the International Association of Pastel Societies convention in Albuquerque, New Mexico, I was able to paint again in the beautiful northern New Mexico high desert. With its clarity of color and diversity of textures, I was reminded of why it has inspired so many artists over the years. While painting there, I was also reminded of one of most irritating issues of working en plein air: the intensity of surrounding light and how it affects the appearance of our paintings.”
