For me, plein air painting is about recording my emotional reaction to a specific place at a specific time of day. The studio painting that comes from that experience is an extension of the intense feelings and reactions I had when painting outside.

My goal is to engage viewers emotionally by creating representational light filled paintings with intense colors and strong value patterns. I would like the viewer to feel a part of the landscape or as if they could reach out and touch my animals.

Addren Doss, a native of Atlanta, spent the first 20 years of her career as a graphic designer doing corporate and freelance work. After moving to North Carolina she began to experiment with her true passion drawing and painting, and spent several years studying art at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She has also studied with Ann Tempelton, Frank LaLumia, and extensively with Albert Handell.

Addren teaches pastel and drawing at The Sanctuary at Revolution Mills in Greensboro. She will also be teaching a pastel workshop and a plein air oil workshop summer 2009 at the Florence Thomas Memorial Art School in Glendale Springs, North Carolina. She is always available to teach plein air painting on a one-on-one basis. For information on these classes you can reach Addren at addrendesigns@aol.com, or visit her website at www.addrendoss.com.

Addren is a juried Associate Member of Women Artists of the West, juried Associate Member of Oil Painters of America, founding and charter member of The Piedmont Outdoor painting Society, and a member of the Pastel Society of North Carolina. She and her husband live in Greensboro, North Carolina. Her work can be found in many private and corporate collections across the country and internationally.

PSNC Photo Depot

All of us have trouble finding good reference photos from time to time, so we have decided to build a repository of copyright-free images donated by our members. Anyone who wishes to participate may bring as many 5x7 or 8x10 color prints of any photo they wish to release permission to use to our monthly meetings. There will be no cost to use the photos and therefore no compensation to the photographer. By sharing in this way, we can all become better artists. We hope you'll contribute to this resource!
