Kim Werfel is an artist and teacher who creates pastel portraits of people and animals that convey sensitivity to her subject’s personalities as well as capturing their likeness. Her paintings have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions throughout North Carolina. Commissioned portraits are held in New York, California, Florida, Nevada, North Carolina and Virginia. You can find her work with the Pastel Society of North Carolina’s exhibits, the Fine Art League of Cary’s exhibits and in Pittsboro’s downtown Chatham Arts Gallery. Kim has her B.F.A. degree in Advertising Design from NY Institute of Technology, Old Westbury, NY and her Masters of Science in Art Education from L.I. University, C.W. Post Campus, Brookville, NY. She is a former Wake County Art teacher and long-time advertising production coordinator for Time, Sports Illustrated and People Magazines, NYC, NY.

My work begins with an emotional response to both the subject and composition. A likeness is not enough; I’m after the nuance of personality, spirit and energy to make a portrait a piece of art. The play of impressionistic colors, shapes, light and edges are my language to communicate to the viewer.

PSNC Photo Depot

All of us have trouble finding good reference photos from time to time, so we have decided to build a repository of copyright-free images donated by our members. Anyone who wishes to participate may bring as many 5x7 or 8x10 color prints of any photo they wish to release permission to use to our monthly meetings. There will be no cost to use the photos and therefore no compensation to the photographer. By sharing in this way, we can all become better artists. We hope you'll contribute to this resource!
