Lindesay Harkness grew up in England and completed her undergraduate and graduate education there, receiving her Ph.D. from Oxford University in 1977. She has lived in the US since 1975. She studied initially with Robert Cormier and then intensively, with Paul Ingbretson, at Fenway Studios in Boston. Both these artists were students of Ives Gammel, who was trained by the great artists of the Boston School: Edmund Tarbell, William Paxton and Joseph de Camp, among others. Lindesay’s work reflects her relationship to the Boston School artists, who are characterized by their good draftsmanship, strong light effects and impressionist color.
Lindesay has lived in Chapel Hill since 1983. She divides her time between portraiture, landscape and still life painting, all in pastel. Her rural childhood in England has given her a strong affinity for gardens, wildflowers and the countryside. Her paintings of these subjects express the sensitivity of her feeling for them. She is known for the beauty of the light effect and the color harmonies in her work.
She is a Guild member of the Society for Classical Realism and a Signature member of the Pastel Society of America.
