Years ago when Flora Giffuni, Founder of the Pastel Society of America and President advised me on how to begin the Pastel Society of North Carolina her advice was to begin small and build from there. It was great advice and how we have grown.   “Southern Comforts” was my accepted entry into that PSA exhibition where I met Flora. This pastel painting 18″ x 24″ was painted on Canson Mi Tienes. The Richeson 75 Landscape, Seascape & Architecture 2011 International Juried Exhibition has selected Lorie Callahan’s pastel painting ‘Turbulence’ to be included in the Gallery and in the on-line exhibition. The exhibition will open June 24th through August 26. [...]

PSNC artist Lorie Callahan is teaching an introduction to soft pastels class on Wednesdays from 1-3pm on March 18 through April 22 (6 weeks). The class includes soft pastel painting techniques, papers, methods of framing and the history of pastel. Also included; the importance of values, drawing, understanding color theory and keys to good composition   Some experience with drawing is helpful but beginners and continuing education students are welcome. Open to both seniors and the general public.   The cost of this class is $60 and interested artists can obtain materials list at the new North Orange County Senior Center in Hillsborough prior to first class.
