Exploration of the still-life with Anne Kiefaber
Pastel Society of North Carolina Art ProgramAnne Kiefaber“Painting the Still-Life”10 a.m.- 12 p.m.Saturday, September 15North Carolina Botanical Gardens100 Old Mason Farm RoadChapel Hill, NC 27517Anne H. Kiefaber “Light is what excites me and the way the dark forms it, whether it is a landscape, figure or still-life . For me, the way light falls on a subject has a great emotional impact that expresses something in my life. I am an admirer of the Baroque period with its emphasis on chiaroscuro but at the same time I love the painters of theBarbizon school ,who while still steeped in the classical tradition, have a loose brushstroke that excites me. In my work, I like to keep these two schools in mind but with a more modern sensibility.”A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Anne Kiefaber attended the Schuler School of fine Arts, and later spent close to 2 years in Paris, working in an art gallery as well as taking classes at the Louvre Evening school and the Ecole Montparnasse. To further her skills she has taken workshops with noted portrait painters, Daniel Greene and Luana Luconi Winner as well as landscape painters like Larry Blovitz and Greg Biolchini and more recently Elienne Basa.

Chalk pastels are pure, vibrant, luscious pigment mixed in some chalk with a little bit of binder added. They are easy to apply and can be reworked any time and many times. They can be used on any surface that has some tooth. They can be applied very loosely or tightly with many different textural variations.
After blocking out the basic compositional shapes with thumbnail sketches, students learn how to apply thin, multiple layers of pigments, the relationships formed between warm and cool colors, and how to use color and values to create depth of field.
Students will need to bring some supplies. Contact the instructor for more information.
