Working from a printed photo or from a digital photo on a screen, participants will learn to crystallize the desired message of the painting, identify which areas are in the light and which are in shadow, learn quick and easy measuring techniques to confidently achieve a likeness, and then bring the portrait to the desired level of finish. Enid Wood, IAPS/MC, PSA, will help you to discover the fun of painting portraits while working in a relaxed atmosphere. All artist levels are welcome. Check the materials list for suggested items to have ready for the workshop.
ENID WOOD, Artist Bio
Denver native Enid Wood first glimpsed pastels at age 4 in Santa Fe when she saw pastel portraits being painted on dozens of easels surrounding the Plaza. Captivated by the magic, she received her first set of pastels for her 13th birthday and began painting portraits immediately. She chose to attend Westminster College (now University) in Salt Lake City because the College offered a class in Interpretive Portrait Painting. Instruction there started in charcoal, progressed to Bottle Green Nupastel, and then full color oils, all of these painted from life.
Enid’s 40-year career as a violin teacher took her to London, where she studied portraits in the National Gallery and in all the major museums in Europe. Upon her return to the USA in 2001 she bought as many pastels as she could afford and began to paint and enter exhibitions. She studied plein air pastel painting for 10 years with Albert Handell, and sells her paintings in Texas galleries and in national exhibitions.
When she retired from violin teaching in 2020, Enid devoted herself once again to painting portraits in pastel: entering exhibitions, garnering awards, and (at last) having a portrait accepted into the Master Circle division of the IAPS spring web show in 2025.
Faces continue to inspire and delight her, as does teaching.
