Diana Coidan was accepted in the Beaufort County Arts Council’s 47th Annual Fine Arts Show in Washington, NC and received third place for her pastel “Holliday’s Anchor Watch” which was also purchased during their Gala Preview Party. Exhibit will hang through January 3, 2012 at the beautiful Arts Council building on Gladden Street in Washington, NC.

How you can be a bigger part of your pastel society in 2012…
It is time to let us know what you would like to do to assist and grow your society. If you would like to be put on the ballot for a position on the Executive Board or one of the committees for 2012, please contact Vinita Jain at (919) 677-9326. Or if you would like to assist in some other manner, please let us know in which committee you would enjoy participating.
Here are some very brief descriptions of the positions your society counts on every year. There are many jobs and multiple opportunities to be a bigger part of the group. Consider what your talents are, where you might enjoy participating, and then talk with any of the current board members or committee chair-people to get a more complete description of the activities.
President: work closely with board and chair-people guiding decisions to maintain and grow the organization. Computer skills necessary.
Vice President: work in concert with the president in all activities and continue to coordinate the meeting location according to the needs of the program presentation as set out by the Program committee prior to each month’s meeting. Computer skills necessary.
Secretary: high degree of computer skills, ability to react and record the spoken program, meeting, board meetings and called meetings. Coordinate these written materials for archiving.
Treasurer: Anne Kiefaber would like to continue in this position for 2012. Please let us know if you would like to assist and prepare for next year. Computer skills necessary.
Membership: the heartbeat of any organization… Committee members will assist chairman with membership materials, encourage sign-up of new members, greet visitors at meetings and exhibitions, assist/coordinate with Publicity Committee and opportunities to present membership information to other groups, schools/colleges, public venues, manage membership list and accounting of new paid members, use computer skills to send out broadcast announcements from President or approved announcements from other committees. Computer skills necessary.
Exhibitions: Chair and members will work with plans already in place and assist:
Statewide Show Chair – Patricia Savage: Competition/ Exhibition scheduled for June 2012 in Raleigh
Members’ Show – need Chair to coordinate members show according to guidelines. Location secured for 2012.
Both show chairs will need people to help with:
- work with gallery directors coordinating logistics of show, reception, etc.
- prepare prospectuses
- work with Publicity committee on necessary materials for widespread advertising
- hanging shows
- receive, check-in, cataloging/inventory artwork for shows
- computer skills necessary.
Publicity: committee positions and needs:
- coordination of media for shows (working with Exhibitions Committee), announcements, and meetings
- working with Programs Committee to get information to the Webmaster, the Membership Chairman, and the public
- copy writing/editing
- layout and design of various advertising materials, fliers, postcards, etc.
- building and maintenance of mailing list/ email list
- computer skills very helpful.
Programs: Most programs are in place from now until mid year 2012. Chair and members would continue to develop program ideas, securing speakers, and do follow up for the balance of 2012. Coordinate with VP on museum location and needs of presenters. Computer skills helpful.
Workshop: chair and committee members will assist with planning of workshops by members/guest instructors/juror-instructors. May work with Exhibition Chairs if workshop is to be coordinated with shows. Activities may include working with board on contract negotiations for location and hire of instructor, preparation of location, manage student lists, see to needs of instructor, etc. Computer skills necessary.
Website: committee to assist coordination of materials for Webmaster. Follow up assistance from other committees. Computer skills necessary.
Hospitality: some coordination of receptions at show locations will take place with Exhibitions Committee and Gallery locations. End of year/ December meeting is a social activity and would be coordinated with Host location. Committee will coordinate food, drink, presentation (serving materials, tablecloths, ice, etc.), and clean up. Computer skills not necessary but occasionally helpful.
Nominating/Elections: work with Executive Board and Membership chair to create recommendation of slate for following year. Coordinate with Webmaster for online voting. Phone or supply hard copy ballots for computer-illiterate members. Computer skills helpful
Historian: manage and update archives of the organization. Computer skills necessary.

2011 Appalachian Pastel Society Juried Member Exhibition
The 2011 Appalachian Pastel Society Juried Member Exhibition will be held at The Black Mountain Center for the Arts, in Black Mountain, North Carolina, from Friday, October 14, through November 23, 2011.
The opening reception is this Friday evening, October 14th, from 6-8pm.

The Appalachian Pastel Society was formed in 2006 to promote an understanding and appreciation of pastel painting throughout the Appalachian Region. Now nearly a hundred pastelists strong, APS offers bi-monthly informational programs and demos on pastel techniques, workshops, juried and non-juried exhibition opportunities for members, and sponsors National Juried Shows open to all. Call for Entries – Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center 2012 exhibition calendar
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: November 15, 2011
The Exhibitions Coordinator for the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC is currently accepting submissions of original 2-D and small 3-D work in all media for consideration for the 2012 exhibition calendar. Submissions of work that explores the role of arts in healing is particularly encouraged.
Available galleries consist of three hallway type areas, four lobby areas, and a locked glass cabinet for small 3D work. Hundreds of viewers see the exhibit areas each day, so the potential for sales is great. Requirements for Submissions:
- Artists must be able to hand deliver and install their work. No shipped work will be accepted.
- Only original work is accepted — no mechanical reproductions, giclees of original works, etc.
- The location is interested in all styles in both 2-D and 3-D media.
- Due to the alternative nature of the space, nudes or imagery with overt religious or sociopolitical themes will not be considered.
Calendar and Installation:
- Exhibition periods are three months in duration. Deliveries and installations are scheduled during designated weekdays. Please note that the works must be hand delivered and installed by the artist. The Exhibitions Coordinator will be there to guide the installation. 2D artists are strongly encouraged to bring a helper to assist with hanging their pieces.
- Shows will generally open at the beginning of each quarter (January, April, July, and October), and come down at the very end of each quarter (March, June, September, and December). Artwork must hang for the entire duration of the exhibition, and must be picked up during the dismantling dates scheduled with the coordinator.
Other Specifics:
- Sales are handled directly through the artist. No sales commission is taken, but work must remain up until the end of the exhibit.
- Work that is not for sale is acceptable; a value must be given for NFS work.
- The artist is responsible for collecting and reporting NC sales tax.
- Artists must provide their own labels and artist statements to be posted with the works.
- There are no fees.
To Enter: Please read the following requirements carefully. Incomplete submissions cannot be considered. Please submit images of available works. Slides and cdroms will be reviewed soon after the deadline to create the 2012 exhibition schedule; for consideration, slides or cdroms must be received by the deadline..
To be considered for an exhibition, please submit all the following materials by November 15th:
- a cover letter stating that you are applying for the BMC location
- 15 – 20 numbered and labeled slides or a CD Rom of jpeg images of available works. Slides should be labeled with the artist’s name, title, media, size, price and date, and numbered to correspond with the image script. Please be sure that jpeg files are named and numbered to correspond with your image script. Please send a printed sheet of thumbnails of the images. Photos can also be included.
- a current resume
- a brief first person artist’s statement (one page maximum)
- numbered image script to correspond with slides or jpegs, listing titles of work, media, size, date, and prices. Artists submitting via a cdrom should also include a tear sheet with numbered thumbnails of their images.
- a list of 2012 dates your work will be available. Exhibit slots run January – March, April – June, July – September, and October to December.
- any supplementary materials you wish
- an SASE with sufficient postage for return of materials. Packets cannot be returned without an SASE.

Open to all artists, for all two-dimensional media except photography. All work must be done en plein air, on the selected day of the paint out in areas as designated on the map. Only one painting will be accepted for the show though you may get two surfaces stamped. Acrylic and oil paintings must be suitably framed or gallery wrapped. Watercolors and pastels must be framed under glass or plexiglass. All frames must have proper hardware (i.e., wires, not saw tooth hangers). Paintings must be priced and have the painting location listed on the back.
Paintings must be available for sale and remain in the gallery until OCTOBER 26. The Gallery will collect a 40% commission on any sales. Any paintings left beyond October 27, 2011 will become the property of Cary Gallery of Artists. All reasonable care will be taken with the artwork, but Cary Gallery of Artists assumes no responsibility for damage done to artwork, nor any liability for injury or death to painters participating in the paint out. Cary Gallery of Artists reserves the right to use images of the paint out for promotional purposes.
