Emily Thompson published her book, “Basics of Art and the Elements of Design”. It’s a basic education course in drawing following the elements of design; composition, perspective, etc. written in simple language with young artists in mind, though it’s good for adults, too. She teaches this course privately and through the Central Carolina Community College (search for Basics of Art). Additionally, she recently won six awards at the Sanford Brush and Palette Club Annual Art Show! Three place awards and three honorable mentions.

Betty Hendrix ‘Wildlife Art’ featured at Museum’s Nature Art Gallery
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences’ Nature Art Gallery presents “Wildlife Art,” paintings and artwork by Pinehurst resident and lifelong artist Betty Hendrix.
The show runs Oct. 5–28, with a Gallery reception Saturday, Oct. 6, 2–4 p.m. All exhibited art is for sale.
Hendrix’ main mediums are colored pencil and pastel, but she also enjoys watercolor, ink drawing and scratchboard. She is also a founding member of the Artists League of the Sandhills in Aberdeen, N.C., and teaches pastel, colored pencil and ink classes there.
“My artworks are done from my own photos or from life. Since wildlife does not sit still for the artist, this show is all done from my own photos. My studio overlooks a nice local lake called Spring Valley Lake. Drawing and painting give me the chance to ‘relive’ my experiences and visions. Artwork is to me a form of meditation.”
The Nature Art Gallery is located inside the Museum Store. Hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 4:45 p.m. Admission to the Gallery is free.

THE PIEDMONT PASTEL SOCIETY is proud to present Jen Evenhus for a Pastel Demo on Saturday, October 13, 2018 from 10:30-12:30 p.m.
Jennifer is a Master Pastelist in the Pastel Society of America, an International Assoc. of Pastel Societies Master Circle member, a Distinquished Pastelist in the Northwest Pastel Society, and a signature member of the Pastel Society of the West Coast
Jen, a nationally recognized award-winning artist, is naturally drawn to patterns, shapes, and movement found in nature, cityscapes, interiors, figures and everyday objects, translating those into unique works of art. Jen captures their essence with simplification and exaggeration in contemporary impressionist and abstract paintings.
The process, or journey, of painting with the exploration, risks, failures and triumphs is her impetus in providing the viewer with emotions and memories that her contemporary paintings evoke. Jen’s work is recognized by its dynamic composition, bold use of color, and confident application of pastel or oil.
