Sycamore Tree won the Claude Parsons Memorial Award in the American Artists Professional League’s 92nd Grand National Exhibition in November 2020. Normally held at the Salmagundi Club in NYC, this year’s exhibition was online. AAPL shortly after offered me an Elected Associate Member status which I accepted.

Jim Hallenbeck
35 year career with IBM retiring as a Vice President in 2014.
Began my long awaited career as an artist working in oils as well as pastels (since 2020).
I am a student, mentee, and friend of the master artist Albert Handell (12 workshops with Albert). I have been juried in over 50 national and local exhibitions winning numerous awards, including two pastels (“Sycamore Tree” in Grand National Exhibition AAPL and “Pines at Umstead” in Peninsula Art League). I am a studio artist of Artspace in Raleigh, NC.
Painting challenges me, frustrates me, and excites me as the process unfolds into a finished product. My hope is that energy conveys itself to the viewer whether it’s a known subject, the movement of color across the canvas or paper, or a memory that sparks from the painting. I desire to deliver a meaningful experience to my audience.

Pastels – Bringing Landscapes to Life
Jim Hallenbeck will be teaching a pastel class on Saturday, February 10 from 1pm to 5pm at the Eno Arts Mill Gallery located at 437 Gimmicks Mill Road #17 in Hillsborough, NC.
The class is for beginner to intermediate pastel artists.
Using soft pastels, students will learn how to start a landscape with a simple pencil drawing followed by a watercolor underpainting (2-3 colors) to set up shapes and dimensions. We will paint on UArt 500 grit paper board eliminating the need for any adhesive. From there we will begin using soft pastels working from the focal point out, dark to light to create the mood and capture the colors of the landscape.
Students will learn the techniques of blending, layering, and using charcoal to create soft, lost edges.

March 12 – Empowerment Series, “How to Plan for Leaving Your Artistic Legacy” with attorney, Justin Eldreth (on Zoom)
The next presenter in PSNC’s “Empowerment Series” will feature Mr Justin Eldreth, Raleigh NC attorney, who will speak on legacy planning for artists. With an eye towards the future, several of our members thought it an important topic. What will you do with your artwork when you die? A sombre topic, especially in the midst of your productive years – full of energy and future, though one that we must all ask. Who will get your finished paintings, or your supplies? A school? A church? An organization? A relative? A friend? Have you a favorite charity or relative? What are the pitfalls of leaving these questions unanswered? Take charge now while you’re in full power of your artistry!
April 9 – Zoom with Regina Burchett
May 14 – Empowerment Series, “Going on a Journey with Creativity” with Janet Burgess (on Zoom)
The vivacious and indomitable Janet Burgess will present the next episode in our Empowerment Series. Ms Burgess has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Carolina University. She graduated Cum Laude with a double major in Art and Spanish. She also earned a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University in New York City with a major in painting and drawing. Her life has been – and is – focused on creativity. An award-winning artist, she has demonstrated her ability to utilize the creativity within herself. Ms Burgess will speak from the point of view that one’s life is best fulfilled if everything we do is characterized by originality of thought and execution.
