Diana Coidan received an Honorable Mention for an accepted pastel in the Coastal Pastel Society of NC Juried Exhibition in New Bern and also received a Honorable Mention for an accepted pastel entitled “After the Storm” in the Beaufort County Arts Council’s 46th Annual Fine Arts Show in Washington, NC, October – January.

Kathy Miles-Morgan will have art on exhibit at UNC Memorial Hospital Auxillary Classroom (first floor) and Fleetfeet Corp. Office in Carrboro Main St. (located at intersection of Rosemary and Main) for the month of October. In January, she will have an exhibit at Cup of Joe in Chapel Hill.
Selected artists will be invited to exhibit in the most beautiful international exhibitions dedicated to the Art of Pastel. Hosted by the Societe des Pastellistes de France; the oldest Pastel Society in the world, created in 1885 thanks to the talents of artists like Degas, Puvis de Chavannes, Besnard, Levy, Helleu Gerveix, Mary Cassatt, Chenet, and many other talented artists when the French Revolution banned the art of pastel, then regarded as the art of the nobility.
Entries will be judged and finalists chosen by Jean-Pierre Merat, President of the Societé des Pastellistes de France and by Diana Moya, Ambassador in America of the Societé des Pastellistes de France, to participate in the International Festival du Pastel in la Ville de Feytiat near Limoges, July 2 to August 21, 2011, Les Estivales Internationales du Pastel at the Abbaye de Saint Florent-le-Vieil, Pays de la Loir, July 9 to August 28, 2011, and the Salon International du Pastel in the Abbaye de Tournus, Bourgogne, September 10 to October 9, 2011. American artists will also be considered for demonstrations and/or workshops during these international events.

PSNC Member Diana Coidan had three paintings accepted into the Coastal Pastel Society of North Carolina Juried Show held at Carolina Colors Pavilion in New Bern, NC from October 1-31, 2010.
Diana was also an invited artist to participate at the Art in the Gardens Fine Art Show and Sale at Duke Health Raleigh Hospital last weekend. Invitation Reception only displaying her nautical theme in pastels with four pieces sold. (Congrats, Diana!)
Additionally, Diana won 3rd place in the Fine Arts League of Cary’s 8th Annual Juried Show for her pastel, “Pamilico Soundside Stillness” (below), as well as an Honorable Mention for an acrylic entitled “Passing By” at the FALC Miniature Juried Show at Page Walker in Cary.
Kim Werfel won 1st place ($100) for her portrait of Eden (below) in the 8th annual Fine Art League of Cary’s Art Exhibit at the Senior Center in Bond Park.
She’s also having a Solo exhibition at the Halle Cultural Arts Center’s Spotlight Gallery from Sept 28- Oct 30th with a reception this Friday, October 1st from 6-8 pm. All all welcome!
Slides/cds of original artwork in all media are now being accepted for the Spring Show at DCCC. Submission deadline is: November 15. The works will be exhibited in the Mendenhall Building, DCCC, Lexington, NC from January 11 to May 6, 2011. Reception: January 11, 4-6 pm.
Submission Information:
Only original work is accepted, in all styles of 2-D and 3-D media. No nudes or imagery with overt religious or sociopolitical themes will be considered. Eight to twelve artists are selected for each show, with 5-12 pieces per artist.
Calendar Information:
Work will be installed the week of January 4th, 2011. Weekend deliveries are not possible. The exhibitions coordinator will be there to guide installation. Artists must bring help if the works are too large to be handled by one person. The show will open with a reception on January 11, 4-6 pm. Art must hang the duration of the show and must be picked up at the end of the show on May 6.
Other Specifics:
Artists must hand deliver and install their own work. Artwork will be insured by the college. There are no fees to enter. Not for sale work is acceptable. In the event of a sale, the college will receive 25% commission. The college is responsible for collection of sales tax. The site will provide a color postcard with the work of one artist selected for this honor. The college will also provide a reception.

For our next PSNC meeting in October, we are having a tour of the North Carolina Museum of Art starting at 10am with a catered lunch immediately following in the Museum Cafe.
We need to choose one selection from the choices below, so please email your preference (ranking the dishes from 1-4) to David (sorecinc@earthlink.net) by October 1. Each attendee is responsible for paying for their own meal, so please bring a check or cash for David to the meeting.
Each guest will receive their choice of iced tea, soda or coffee and bite-sized desserts. Prices include gratuity.

Daniel M. Reams, the Director of the S.T.A.R.T. Program, a new satellite art program through Jerrys Artarama forwarded this information for interested artists.
From Daniel: This program is very unique as S.T.A.R.T. instructors will be able to make their own schedule, teach where they want, whether it’s your studio, home, community center etc, and have the freedom to create your own lessons. In short Jerrys will advertise the S.T.A.R.T. program heavily, the instructors will all be located in one centralized location on the S.T.A.R.T. webpage (STARTART.COM) which is coming soon and you will be able to update your site on the webpage as you see fit. PSNC members David Boone and Suzanne Thomas are participating in the 15th Annual Studio Tour for the Wake County Area Artists this weekend, September 25th & 26th and October 2nd & 3rd from 10am-5pm on Saturday and 1-5pm on Sunday.
There will be a reception and live music to kick things off on Friday, September 24th from 6-9pm at the Wake Forest Birthplace (440 North Main Street, Wake Forest, NC 27587).

Artwork by Betty Hendrix of Whispering Pines, NC has been accepted into the 2010 National Juried Exhibition of the Appalachian Pastel Society! The exhibit will be at Gallery 86 on Main Street in Waynesville, NC. There were 130 paintings submitted by 50 artists from 12 states.
An opening reception for the public will be held on Friday, October 22nd from 6-8 pm and the exhibition will be up from October 20 through November 13, 2010.
Betty will also be exhibiting at the Woman’s Club of Raleigh from October 1-27. There will be approximately 25-30 of her works on display in colored pencil, pastel and watercolor.
Elise Okrend will have an exhibit of her pastel paintings titled “Scenes of Serenity” featuring the beauty and serenity of North Carolina and other enchanting places at the Herb Young Community Center (101 Wilkinson St, Cary) from September 21 through November 22, 2010.
There will be an artist’s reception on Friday, September 24th from 6-8pm.
Our next PSNC meeting will start at 11am (note the time!) at Bond Park in Cary, NC on Saturday, September 18.
A bright and open location across the street from the very large St. Michaels Catholic Church (801 High House Road, Cary 27513) with more than adequate parking. The meeting room is on the same level as the parking (no ramps, or stairs, or elevators), and this location even has paintings by some of our members hanging in the lobby (which were earlier acquired by the Town of Cary). The 300 acre park and lake has trails, play equipment, beautiful scenery begging to be painted, and picnic tables everywhere so that if families wish to come with our members, there will be plenty for them to do! AND a wonderful opportunity to PAINT on location when we are done! Bring a picnic lunch for afterward or we will go to one of Cary’s fun locations right nearby.
Our speaker will be Teresa Brown, artist, mother, wife, business person… will be speaking to us about “paying her bills with her art.” Her story is interesting. She started like all of us did enjoying the craft, and is now a successful artist. She speaks regularly about the “Business of Art.” She has many stories to tell and bits of information that should hit home about showing, selling, and creating art in pastel and oil. This will be an interesting talk and a fulfilling give-and-take-question-and-answer-session for all members to share experiences.
